Every job seeker sending in a resume to a potential employer wants to believe there’s actually someone on the receiving end that reads their entire resume word-for-word. The reality is, your resume will most likely never be read in its entirety â€" especially in today’s competitive job market. Most employers are overwhelmed with the number of applicants they get for each job, most of whom aren’t remotely qualified. Unfortunately, in this point-and-click world of online applications, most people apply to hundreds of jobs knowing they’re not qualified. They’re just hoping to get lucky. Typically, resumes arrive by email and someone looks at each one but because of the volume, they must make a judgment on each one quickly â€" typically around six seconds is given per resume. The reader then decides if each candidate is worth further consideration. All of this is decided by a brief scan, trying to determine if the person has the relevant background and experience for the role. If they dont see any connection between background and experience and the job requirements, they immediately move on because there are plenty more to review. So how are resumes typically reviewed? How do they make those snap decisions with just a quick scan? Here’s a few tips on how recruiters review resumes: They scan the document to see if there are any related keywords in the resume that are apparent. Most have to do with skills, tools, processes etc., giving preference to recent experience vs. history from years ago. If not, they move on. If so They continue to look for any applicable education, certifications, or other required criteria. If not, they move on. If so That resume gets placed in the “maybe” pile and they will come back to reevaluate it and compare it to the other resumes that end up in the “maybe” pile. This might make the employer/recruiter seem a little cruel and heartless but they’re not. Is this a flawed system? Sure, but as of now, there isn’t another way to deal with the immense volume of job applicants that cross a recruiter’s desk. So how do you make your resume stand out? Your resume needs to scream  â€œI’m a fit!”  in that first initial scan! So, make your work history relevant and clear. Be sure to format your skills, experience and certifications so they jump out. Write in brief, concise phrases so they are easily digested in the first scan. Don’t use long sentences or paragraphs. If you can begin to understand the typical process an employer takes when reviewing resumes, you can be more strategic to give yourself a better chance of being selected.

Domestic Violence in the U.S. Military Domestic Violence in the U.S. Military Domestic violence in the U.S. military has become a focus for the Department of Defense as awareness of the issue has grown. Domestic violence is a complicated problem and when it involves a service member, how it is handled can be a complex process and one that the victim may not understand.   Domestic Violence Involving Civilians and Service Members The militarys role in a domestic violence case depends a lot on whether the accused is a service member or a civilian.   If the abuser is a civilian, the military has no control over the matter. In most cases, all the military can do is turn information over to civilian authorities. Installation commanders do have the power to bar civilians from military installations, and they will exercise that power to protect military members from abusive civilian spouses, if necessary. If the abuser is a military member, domestic violence situations are handled on two separate tracks: the  military justice system  and the family advocacy system. Its important to realize that these are two separate systems. The Family Advocacy System Family Advocacy is an  identification,  intervention, and  treatment  program- not a punishment system. Its entirely possible that the Family Advocacy Committee will return a finding of substantiated abuse, but there will be insufficient legally admissible evidence to allow punishment under the provisions of military justice. On the other hand, one should realize that the Family Advocacy system does not enjoy the right of confidentiality under military law (such as with chaplains and attorneys), and evidence gathered, and statements made during Family Advocacy investigations may be used in military justice proceedings. If the incident(s) happen off base, civilian agencies may be given jurisdiction on the legal side, but Family Advocacy should still be notified. Local police may or may not report the incident to base officials. Department of Defense (DOD) officials are currently working to develop memoranda of understanding with civilian law enforcement authorities to establish such reporting procedures. Regulations and Response to Reports Regulations  require  military and DOD officials to report any suspicion of family violence to Family Advocacy, no matter how small. It includes commanders, first sergeants, supervisors, medical personnel, teachers and military police. In many cases, when responding to a domestic situation, the commander or first sergeant will order the military individual to reside in the dormitory/barracks until the Family Advocacy investigation is completed. It may be accompanied by a military protective order, which is a written order prohibiting the military member from having any contact with the alleged victim. Many bases have an abused, dependent safeguard system, where the first sergeant or commander can place the family members in billeting under an assumed name. When domestic violence is reported to Family Advocacy, the agency will assign a caseworker to assess the victims safety, develop a safety plan, and investigate the incident. Throughout the process, victims advocates ensure that the victims medical, mental health and protection needs are being met. Family Advocacy officials will also interview the alleged abuser. The alleged abuser is informed of his or her rights under the provisions of  Article 31 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ)  and does not have to speak to the investigation officials if he or she chooses not to. If child abuse is involved, regulations  require  that local child protection agencies be notified, and participate in the process. After the Investigation After the investigation, the case is then presented to a multidisciplinary case review committee with representatives from the Family Advocacy Program, law enforcement, staff judge advocate, medical staff, and chaplain. The committee decides whether the evidence indicates abuse occurred and arrives at one of the following findings: SubstantiatedA case that has been investigated and the preponderance of available information indicates that abuse has occurred. It means that the information that supports the occurrence of abuse is of greater weight or more convincing than the information that indicates that abuse did not occur. SuspectedA case determination is pending further investigation. The duration of an investigation in a suspected case should not exceed 12 weeks. UnsubstantiatedAn alleged case that has been investigated and the available information is insufficient to support the claim that child abuse and/or neglect or spouse abuse did occur. The family needs no Family Advocacy services. Family Advocacy Committee Definitions of Abuse In making determinations, the Committee uses the following definitions for abuse: Child Abuse and/or NeglectIncludes physical injury, sexual maltreatment, emotional maltreatment, deprivation of necessities, or combinations that harm or threaten a childs well-being by an individual responsible for the childs welfare. The term encompasses both acts and omissions on the part of a responsible person.A child is a person under 18 years of age for whom a parent, guardian, foster parent, caretaker, an employee of a residential facility or any staff person providing out-of-home care is legally responsible. The term child means a natural child, adopted child, stepchild, foster child or ward. The term also includes an individual of any age who is incapable for self-support because of a mental or physical incapacity and for whom treatment in a military treatment facility (MTF) is authorized. Spouse AbuseIncludes assault, battery, threat to injure or kill, other acts of force or violence, or emotional maltreatment inflicted on a partner in a lawful marriage when one of the partners is a military member or is employed by the Department of Defense and is eligible for treatment in an MTF. A spouse under 18 years of age shall be treated in this category. Based on the committees recommendations, the commander decides what action to take regarding the abuser. The commander determines whether to order the individual into treatment and/or to seek to impose disciplinary procedures under the UCMJ. The commander may also seek to obtain the  discharge  of the service member from the military. Abuse Victims and a Spouse's Military Career Victims often hesitate to report abuse because they fear the impact it will have on their spouses career. A Department of Defense study found that service members reported for abuse are 23 percent more likely to be separated from the service than non-abusers and somewhat more likely to have other than honorable discharges. The majority who remain in the military are more likely to be promoted more slowly than non-abusers. Even if a domestic violence case is handled off base in the civilian criminal court system, criminal conviction or even a misdemeanor involving domestic violence can end a service members military career; the 1996 Lautenberg Amendment to the Gun Control Act of 1968 makes it unlawful for anyone who has been convicted of a misdemeanor of domestic violence to possess firearms. The law applies to law enforcement officers and military personnel. Protection for Spouses and Dependents Many military spouses dont know that federal law gives financial protection to the spouse if the member is discharged for an offense that  involves abuse of the then-current spouse or a dependent child.  It doesnt matter if the discharge is a punitive discharge imposed by a  court-martial  or an administrative discharge initiated by the commander. The key is that the reason for the discharge must be for a dependent-abuse offense. The term involves abuse of the then-current spouse or a dependent child means that the criminal offense is against the person of that spouse or a dependent child. Crimes that may qualify as dependent-abuse offenses are ones such as sexual assault, rape, sodomy, assault, battery, murder, and manslaughter. (This is not an exhaustive or exclusive listing of dependent-abuse offenses, but is provided for illustrative purposes only.) Victim Payments The duration of the payments cannot exceed 36 months. If the military member had less than 36 months of obligated military service at the time of the discharge or imposition of the court-martial sentence, then the duration of the payments will be the length of the members obligated service, or 12 months, whichever is greater. If a spouse receiving payments remarries, payments terminate as of the date of the remarriage. Payment shall not be renewed if such remarriage is terminated. If the payments to the spouse terminate due to remarriage and there is a dependent child not living in the same household as the spouse or member, payments shall be made to the dependent child. If the military member who committed the abuse resides in the same household as the spouse or dependent child to whom compensation is otherwise payable, payment shall terminate as of the date the member begins residing in such household. If the victim was a dependent child and the spouse has been found to have been an active participant in the conduct constituting the criminal offense or to have actively aided or abetted the military member in such conduct against that dependent child, the spouse shall not be paid transitional compensation. In addition to the transitional benefits, if the military member was eligible for retirement and was denied retirement because of the criminal offense, the spouse can still apply to a divorce court for a division of retired pay under the provisions of the Uniformed Services Former Spouse Protection Act, and the military will honor the payments. (Note: Under this provision, such payments terminate upon remarriage).

It can emerge from any impactful instance that made us feel bad, scared, hurt or ashamed. By this definition, we have all experienced some degree of trauma in the process of growing up.Having “suppressed emotions” is another way of saying we ha ve unresolved trauma in our lives.But what does this actually mean?How people become emotionally stuckIf you’ve had a hard experience in your past where something negative happened, or where you failed miserably, you might never step far outside your comfort zone again.In that case, you’ve become incredibly limited because of your past.Your emotions own you, rather than you owning your emotions.When this happens, your personality stops developing, and you become incredibly predictable as a person.Your life becomes quite repetitive.You may continue to develop mentally and cognitively, such as learning from books and school. You could have a head full of facts and knowledge, which are easily acquired in an information world. But emotionally, you are stone. You are frozen at the same level you were when you got hurt.If we never resolve the emotional pain, then we are forever damaged and crippled in our lives. As a result, we begin avoiding situations that would make us vulnerable t o experiencing similar pain again.We become “frozen” in our development as a human being, unable to embrace and fully take-in new experiences.An easy way to examine your level of emotional maturity is how often you step outside of your comfort zone. If it’s rare to put yourself into the vulnerable position of not knowing the answers or how things will turn out, then you likely have trauma from your past that is holding you hostage - emotionally - and stopping you from fully developing your potential as a person.Research shows that the older people get, generally, the less open they are to having new experiences.In this article, I’m going to break-down the science of how to overcome all emotional blocks and become emotionally-free.When you become emotionally free and flexible, you become far more dynamic and fluid as a personality. Your ability to learn and adapt skyrocket.Your lifestyle and interests will continually change because you have the freedom to take on new thing s. You’re no longer hostage to your emotions.You’re not afraid of getting hurt.You’re not afraid of being wrong.In the words of Dr. Susan Jeffers, you know that regardless of what happens, “You can handle it.” Hence, she says we should, “Feel the fear and do it anyway.”According to educator Sir Ken Robinson, “If you’re not prepared to be wrong, you’ll never come up with anything original.”One of the primary reasons many people don’t view themselves as creative is because art and creativity are emotional and vulnerable experiences. You have to put yourself out there. You have to try something that might fail.As a result, many people discard the idea altogether, claiming that some inherent part of their personality or genetics is simply not “creative.”This isn’t true.Extreme creativity is available to anyone who is emotionally flexible and healthy.In fact, creativity is often the doorway to emotional freedom, because, through art and creativity, a person can courageously put themselves “out there,” and that very act of courage shifts a person’s relationship with their emotions and their past.Shifting your relationship with your emotionsIt’s important to note that when it comes to healing suppressed pain or trauma, that you don’t have to sit on someone’s couch and re-hash the past.Instead, you need to courageously move forward in your life.As you step outside of your comfort zone, you will experience the stress-response - fight, flee or freeze. Being out of the comfort zone is a beautiful experience because it is entirely physical and emotional.It’s a full-on sensory experience - something many people stop experiencing as they grow older.The main reason this “somatic” experience arises is that when you’re out of your “comfort zone” - or in a new situation where you don’t fully know how things will turn out - you’re in a state of uncertainty.Many psychologists argue that “uncertainty” is the foundat ion of all fears. This makes complete sense because our brains are actually designed to predict the outcomes of our behavior.Therefore, when we’re in a new situation, all sorts of physical and emotional red lights start to signal - our stress response. What our brain is telling us is that we’re in uncharted territory.It is your relationship with THIS EXPERIENCE - your stress response while dealing with new things - that reflects your level of emotional maturity.When you re-establish this relationship, you actually change your memories of the past.But you only change your memory of the past if you don’t freeze up. Because undoubtedly, the act of stepping outside of your comfort zone and trying something new may trigger negative emotions and memories from the past.You’ll try to sabotage yourself.But instead, you want to be “psychologically flexible,” which means you fully take in the experience, and move forward toward your goal anyway. In other words, you feel the fear and do it anyway.What you’ll quickly realize is that you can do hard things. You can “handle it.”Even if things fall apart or don’t work out the first time, you can figure out. You can commit to big things and you can keep those commitments, regardless of what you have to learn and become along the way.You can do it.This is how confidence is developed.But there’s more.This is also THE ONLY WAY a person can become fully self-actualized.Breaking-down the process of self-actualizationAccording to Abraham Maslow, “self-actualization” is the emotional state of a person who is in a position to achieve their highest potential.They have had all of their “base” needs - physical, emotional, and relational - met. They are a healthy, happy, and mature human being.Having a healthy sense of self-esteem is great. But self-actualization is something totally different.You need far more than self-esteem to become self-actualized.There are lots of people out there who feel good ab out themselves but aren’t willing to pay the emotional price of expanding their personality.You cannot become self-actualized if you’re comfortable where you are.According to Maslow, a key requirement to becoming self-actualized is having what he calls, “peak experiences.” He defined peak experiences “as rare, exciting, oceanic, deeply moving, exhilarating, elevating experiences that generate an advanced form of perceiving reality, and are even mystic and magical in their effect upon the experimenter.”Peak experiences are those moments that stretch and shift your perspective of yourself and reality.As Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr. said, “A mind that is stretched by a new experience can never go back to its old dimensions.”The only way to have your mind stretched is to step outside of your comfort zone and have a new experience. In other words, “peak experiences” are simply those moments where you go through deep experiential learning.These moments of deep learning a nd transformation leave you in a state of awe, wonderment, and gratitude.You need to have these experiences regularly in order to reach a state of self-actualization.Actually, you need to make having soul-stretching experiences your “normal” way of life. Because once this becomes your way of life, then you are completely emotionally-free and flexible.When you are emotionally free and flexible, then you as a person also become free and flexible.This doesn’t mean that you no longer experience emotions or fears. Rather, it means that you are completely fine experiencing whatever is required to achieve what you believe you should, or what you believe is right.You’re no longer constrained by your emotions, and thus, you’re no longer STONE. Instead, you’re highly fluid and flexible, even spontaneous.Breaking the process down into bite-sized steps“Courage is the Gateway. This is where you start to see life as challenging and exciting instead of overwhelming.” - Dr. David H awkins Wherever you are in your life, it will require courage to get to the next level Courage means you proactively face risks and uncertainty in order to achieve a noble and worthwhile end Courage is ALWAYS the gateway to the “next level” As you courageously step into the unknown, you’ll experience the stress-response - flight, flee, freeze You experience the stress response because your brain is designed to predict the outcomes of your behavior, and when you’re in a totally new situation, you cannot fully predict what will happen Uncertainty is the foundation of all fears The only way to truly be “free” is to embrace the uncertainty of moving forward in your life - of not knowing exactly how things will turn out yet remaining committed to your values and purpose Becoming flexible and successful while outside of your comfort zone is known as emotional flexibility or having a tolerance for ambiguity As you step outside of your comfort zone and successfully move forward, you’ll have peak experiences which will stretch your perspective of yourself and even of reality The more peak experiences you have, the more emotionally flexible you will become As you have new experiences, your memory of the past will change You’ll no longer be bound by your past All “trauma” or “suppressed emotions” will be gone You’ll be healed You heal yourself not by going backward but going forward (hence: the best defense is offense) Once you get to the point where you are no longer in your own way, emotionally, then you are self-actualized Self-actualized people are those people who are willing to be and do whatever must be done to live their values and fulfill their purpose. They act courageously regularly. Daily.They are flexible and powerful.They weren’t born that way. Instead, they proactively chose, over and over, to become who they are.You can choose to become self-actualized yourself.But one thing is certain. Everything you want is on the other side of fear.You must be bold in your action.You can’t be frozen to your past.You have to move forward.This will take courage.It will involve failing a lot and learning a lot.But with each step forward, you’ll have peak experiences. Those brief windows of time where you’re in awe of everything. Life will become more spiritual to you.You’ll develop a sense of mission and purpose.You’ll stop overly defining yourself and what you can become and what you can do.Your potential will increasingly expand.You’ll continuously watch yourself do things beyond what you p reviously thought was possible.You’ll watch as your life continues to take on a new form, and as the goals you set are quickly realized.Are you going to take the journey?It’s not easy.It never will be.And the fear is never going to go away.
