Getting Noticed to Get Ahead in Your Career
Getting Noticed to Get Ahead in Your CareerGetting Noticed to Get Ahead in Your CareerCoordinator. Assistant. Associate. (Contractor). These are the words in job titles that career-driven professionals use as fuel to get them to the next stepping-stone. Tenacity and passion will take you places, but will they get you ahead in your career by themselves? What are some practical things that could help bring those strivings to fruition?Become the Master of the MundaneIt can be difficult to handle the moelendonous elements of your job. When you first get into an entry-level role, you typically start off with the fundamentals listed on the description of the role to which you applied. It looks something like thisJob Responsibilities IncludeSchedule coordination between multiple departmentsSupporting such-and-such team with processing invoicesUpdating the bi-weekly newsletterAnother task youre not that excited aboutAnother task you dont find much value inWhile youre excited to dive into the nitty-gritty, its essential to lay out a broad and sturdy foundation. This ensures success and establishes credibility. If supervisors and managers see that you can execute your basic tasks flawlessly, theyll take note and start to trust you with more.Practical Application Be extremely organized from your desk being spotless, keeping to-do lists, and papers being neatly filed, to libraries of well-organized e-folders, e-mail templates, and Excel checklists. Labeling and color coordinating are highly recommended Organization and detail orientation is the key to mastering the mundane.Bite off precisely what you can chewOnce youve mastered the mundane, youll have a more accurate gauge of your bandwidth. What you dont want to do is go overboard on this next tip. It might be the death of your career. As you become an expert at what you do, it will inevitably start taking less time to get those things done. This will free up a bit of time to take on additional projects or tasks.Practical Application If youre a Production Coordinator with dreams of being a full-fledged Director of Production, you might first reach out to an Associate Producer and ask if they simply need help with any of their tasks.Talk to your manager. Let them know what interests you. Ask if there are opportunities to offer any support on those projects. This will lead to a slow dispensation of tasks outside of the original scope of your responsibilities. View these tasks as opportunities to showcase your capabilities.Be careful not to bite off more than you can chewIt might look impressive that an entry-level employee is proactive, but if a manager or associate chooses to trust you with something new, and youre not quite ready for it, this can backfire. The best managers will have realistic expectations of you, but its best to take on only what you know you can handle. On the other side of that coin, you dont want to sell yourself short. Never lack the confidence to challenge yourself. Spend enough time on the mundane so you have that certainty. At this point, you may choose to stay content with your basic job responsibilities. Some people are truly happy in that place and essentially become the Yoda of their position. Usually, people love working with them because theyve devoted their time to establishing their credibility. But if youre eager to advance in your career, read on.Present ideas and make them happenMastering your day-to-day activities and volunteering for other projects will help you get noticed. The thing that gets you ahead in your career is leading a project of your own. As you spend time with a company, you learn their processes, become familiar with their culture, and establish that oh-so-important credibility. With all this intel and support, you should be well equipped to present something new. Present a solution to an ongoing problem, a creative idea, an innovative asset, or a new process.Practical Application Youve noticed there are consistent issues in a process and you think you have a solution. Share it. Help it get implemented. For example, youre an HR Assistant and you notice that morale seems low. You think it might be because of stress. Suddenly, you have this great idea to host an onsite seminar on relaxation or to book a calming yoga class.Dont just shareCome with a plan and offer to spearhead it. Chances are, management might think your idea is great but they dont have their own bandwidth to make it happen. YOU do.Get noticed and get ahead in your careerDo your job well, then take on more. If you want to get ahead in your career, then come up with an idea and run with it The hardest part is working through this with patience. The road is often long and hard, but tenacity and passion will carry you through.

8 tips for when you fear age bias in the workplace
8 tips for when you fear age bias in the workplace8 tips for when you fear age bias in the workplaceI see a trend in the American workforce and as a coach struggle with how to make sense of it. This week alone one of my clients was terminated, one was put on a 90-day Performance Improvement Plan that is likely to end in termination, and another had his compensation decreased by $100,000. I find it no accident that the ages of these three people respectfully are 56, 57 and 61.In many ways, ur culture does not value the seasoned wisdom of decades of experience or appreciate the dedication of years of service. Companies see that they can replace aging employees with younger people they can pay less. Its as if they feel younger energy will bring mora innovation and greater results at a lower cost. They feel the aging employees mindset is outdated and that they cant keep up with technology. That is just plain and simply - Age Bias - and short-sighted.Employees see this coming. Organizat ions send people they have stereotyped subliminal messages of disapproval that lower their confidence and depletes their self-esteem, creating doubt in their worth. When someone carries this uncertainty in themselves their perceived under-performance usually becomes a self -fulfilling prophecy. When the end finally comes they are completely demoralized.Companies forget that people in this age range taught themselves how to use a computer and every other form of technology and did not grow up with technology integrated into everything they learned. So when it comes to adaptability the aging worker has the market cornered. They have a work ethic eclipsed by no one and carry the least amount of entitlement of anyone in the workforce. They dont need any, let alone continual, feedback (for which companies are spending a fortune to implement internal coaching and other programs) to inspire their dedication to get the job done and they are loyal to a fault. Theyve lived through the cycles o f economics, industries, and markets and can anticipate from experience. They arent afraid to pick up the phone and cold call someone in a way that results in new business. They can carry on a meaningful conversation with someone naturally because its how they built their portfolios before text messages and sound bites became the modus operandi. So why dont we harness the strengths of these seasoned professionals? Because we think they are not productive? As leaders, we havent spent time identifying how to modify their roles so these Jedis can mentor on how to connect, lead, sell, strategize. Instead, we just make cuts or spend fortunes on consultants, many who are good but more often steal our watches and tell us what time it is.Lets leverage the talents of these mavens as advisors, trainers, and leaders. Lets not put them out to pasture. Other cultures dont do this for a reason. Its stupid and has no honor. Keep in mind EVERYONE will age. And then what will happen to YOU?If you are in this age group here is some advice to position yourself to be invaluable1. Make sure you are working on things that are Measurable, Not Easily Transferable, New and Different, and Hold a High Learning Curve. This includes relationship building, specific expertise, soft skills, leadership, strategic ability. If you arent, do so. If that means leaving the company or transferring to a different role - consider it before they can replace you with someone younger at half the cost.2. Make sure you work for a company that LIVES the values that hand on the wall.Define YOUR values. What is important to you? Do your values align with those of the company?3. Find time to mentor others.Share your expertise. Counsel people. Have an open door. Be the person no one wants to see let go.4. When interviewing and get told, Youre overqualified have a response ready.Ive spent my career with the pressures of corporate America. At this point, I am excited to find a role where I can put my expertise to work to actually accomplish something without the extrinsic noise.5. Know your transferable skills and apply for roles outside your comfort zone.Consider new industries, roles, a smaller organization. Watch my free training Three Ways To Move to the Next Level in Your Career to learn how to define your transferable skills at here.Watch this and know all the things you are qualified to do that you hadnt realized.6. Define your strengths and be able to speak to how you have leveraged them for success.Ask your friends and colleagues to define your strengths. Go online and take free strengths assessments. Build your self-awareness so you can be in a role that aligns with your talents.7. Write down three people over the age of 55 who you admire. Then list what you observe about them that draws you to them. What do you want to develop in yourself?8. Separate your lifelong career accomplishments from the instance at hand.Nothing negates all that you have done. Make a list of all that you a re grateful for. No one can take that away from you.As leaders lets not stereotype. Arent our employees failures ultimately our failures as their leader? Embrace the expertise and wisdom of each employee individually so that you may place them in roles where they can feel fulfilled and benefit the company. Align their values with that of the organizations. Make sure they are in the right seat on the bus. Set them up with measurable goals so their value speaks for itself. Support them with productivity tools and professional development tailored to their individual needs. They will pay for themselves. They are good listeners, detail-oriented, punctual, dedicated, confident, focused, attentive and have advanced critical-thinking skills. As individuals lets remain open to learning new things, taking risks and opening our perspective on how to put our talents to good use. Seek out new opportunities to diversify skills. The bus is bigger than you think. There is room for everyone. Lets mak e room so top talent seeks our team as the best place to work because of our culture.

Building a Better Warmer for Newborns
Building a Better Warmer for Newborns Building a Better Warmer for Newborns Building a Better Warmer for NewbornsEvery year, about 4 million babies die in their first four weeks of life, mainly from complications of preterm birth, infection, and asphyxia, researchers say.But a team with Design that Matters believes they can prevent mora than a quarter of those deaths by creating a better newborn warmer. Their Otter newborn warmer is designed to cost much less and consume less energy than the currently available warmers. It is also easy to operate, clean, and sterilize and difficult to get wrong, its designers say. The heating assembly for the Otter newborn warmer was re-engineered to make it less costly to manufacture. Image Design That MattersOtter is a warming bassinet for newborns in developing countries that are born prematurely, too low in weight, or both. The prototype, completed last summer, is durable, is easy to wash, and features an easy-to-read and easy-to-u se numerical interface. The numbers were a design change suggested by hospital staff in Hanoi, Vietnam, during a field test and fact-finding mission.DtM is the organization behind the Firefly phototherapy device that treats newborns with jaundice, and their Otter warmer is designed to mimic some of Fireflys easy-to-use interface. The anwender interface mirrors the design language of the Firefly phototherapy device. The elements of each interface panel are similarly aligned, which makes the user interaction with both devices more intuitive, DtM writes.Otters heating assembly is now made from a translucent polymer film. Reviewers of Otters early design recommended that change over the previous version, as DtM explains The original prototype used nichrome wire embedded in a CNC-milled channel in the base of the polycarbonate bassinet. Manufacturing research suggested this would be a prohibitively expensive fabrication process with a high part rejection rate. The heater assembly accounte d for $50 out of Otters $180 bill of materials. Our new alternative, the PTF heater, is similar to the heater wires you might see embedded in your rear windshield as a defroster. It is manufactured in a single step used for generic flexible circuits, and would allow us to more easily incorporate thermal sensors and other components. The PTF assembly would be applied to the bottom of the Otter as a semi-transparent sticker. Our current cost-estimate for the new PTF heater assembly is roughly $20more than a 50 percent cost reduction.More for You Read the latest about technology and society from ASME.orgDtM outlined the deficiencies in newborn warmers that are available now. These options also amount to the competitive landscape their Otter warmer is up against. One alternative to KMC is an incubator, a convective warming device that provides warm and humid air that is regulated by measuring the newborns skin temperature with a disposable stick-on probe. Another alternative is a radiant warmer, which provides heating through infrared radiation that is also regulated by skin temperature probe measurements. Unfortunately, neither of these devices is well suited to the context of a low-resource hospital both are complex, expensive to maintain and difficult to keep clean.Newborns are particularly vulnerable to hospital-acquired infections. One Boston NICU technician estimated that it takes 45 minutes to properly sterilize an incubator between patients. Few rural hospitals in developing countries have the resources to follow this protocol. In addition, few can afford to maintain a sufficient number of incubators, so it is not uncommon to find two or more newborns sharing a single device. The Otter protoype resulted from a collaboration with medical and engineering experts in Vietnam and a partnership between DtM, the device manufacturer MTTS, and the non-governmental organization Day One Health. The partners plan to accelerate the development of improved low-cost infant medical devices for low-resource countries, DtM writes. After creating their prototype, DtM and partners plan to test it further inAfrica. Then they plan another manufacturing review with MTTS in Vietnam (the first review recommended the change in the warming mechanism) and also with manufacturing vendors in China.Rob Goodier is managing editor at Engineering for Change. Environmental Criminology
Environmental CriminologyEnvironmental CriminologyEnvironmental criminologydescribes the relationship of the individual environments in which crimes occur and how they influence or contribute to criminal activity and behavior. The Four Elements of Crime Criminologists insist that there are four necessary elements for a crime to occur. If one of these elements are not present, then no crime has occurred. Law First, there must be a law to be broken. If the activity is not illegal, then obviously it cant be criminal.Offender Second, someone must have broken the law. If there is no offender, there is no crime.Victim or Target Third, in order for an act to be criminal, there must be a victim. In so-called victimless crimes, the state or community as a whole is said to be the victim because of the problems that are believed to be a result of the behavior.Place Fourth, the activity or behavior must have occurred in a place. There can be no crime in a vacuum. Focus on the Environment For environmental criminologists, the fourth element, the place, is the focus of their studies. The field began to develop in the early 1980s and looks at the environmental factors that they believe can lead to influence crime and criminal behavior. In studying the place, environmental criminologists are not so much focused on the geographic location, but on the elements within the location, such as lighting conditions, the state of repair or disrepair that buildings may be in, and other neighborhood conditions. Environmental criminology looks at data such as the time and place of crimes in order to help law enforcement officers better understand where crimes are occurring. This helps police officers focus their patrols in order to take a more preventative approach to crime solving, as opposed to a reactionary approach. In this way, environmental criminology is complementary to community-oriented policing. Crime Mapping One of the fruchtwein recognizable examples of environmen tal criminology put into practice is the crime map. No doubt, youve seen television shows or movies, or maybe youve ever been to a local police station, where youve seen a large map posted to a wall with pins and other markings on it. Those pins or marks indicate areas where crimes have occurred and are a very basic example of what criminologists call crime mapping. Environmental criminologists take the mapping even further, pouring over the data to search for patterns. Identifying Patterns The ultimate goal is to use any patterns they locate to help identify the root causes of the crimes and help devise workable solutions to the problem. For example, if a large number of robberies are occurring in a specific place at a specific time, environmental criminologists will want to look at that location at that time to determine what the contributing factors may be. Broken Windows Theory There is a belief held by some criminologists that fit in line very well with the overall idea behind environmental criminology. The thinking is that people act according to what they perceive to be the social norms of their environment. When other people are not around to demonstrate normative behavior, people must instead look to their environment for clues. The Broken Windows Theory suggests that the physical and visible state of the buildings, lawns, homes, and businesses provide important cues as to how people behave in that area. The idea is that the more broken windows there are in the neighborhood, the higher the likelihood that there is a crime in the area. Career Potential Environmental criminology is a new and developing field, with plenty of room for growth. As technology advances in criminological studies, the ability to identify and isolate patterns in criminal activity will only increase, in turn increasing the need and desire for qualified individuals to gather and vokalist the data. If you are a person who is interested in a career as a criminologist, es pecially if you enjoy finding patterns and solving problems, a career as an environmental criminologist may be just the job for you.

A 5 Point Checklist for New Hires - Spark Hire
A 5 Point Checklist for New Hires - Spark HireHiring new employees is stressful. At least, it will be if you dont really know what you want from a future employee. Depending on the position and what it requires, even your interview questions may vary. No matter what position you are interviewing for, you need some consistency so you can determine the best fit for your company. If you arent sure where to start, here is a list of 5 things you should ask yourself about every candidateDo They Care About Your Business? Is the individual you are interviewing passionate about what you do? Do they know who you are or are you just another job posting they saw? Ideally, you want to hire someone who is excited about your company and mission. Someone who wants to learn from you and become a true part of your team. You can gauge this by asking them why they want to work there. Is this just a job they will come to hate in the future or is this something they really want to help further their career ? Bottom line, you want someone who is enthusiastic and will put their all into your business. Are They Responsible? As you look for a new hire, you want someone who is responsible. Someone who will be able to handle anything you throw their way. As a small business owner looking to build your company, you want personnel who can handle the stress. This simply wont happen if you dont have responsible, hard-working employees. So how do you know if a potential employee is responsible or not? You ask them behavioral questions. For example Tell me about a time when you underwent a task that was difficult for you. How they went about completing that task will be a great indicator of their work ethic and responsibility. Do They Accurately Represent Themselves? Before you hire someone, you want to get a feel for who they really are. Meaning that you want to find someone who is not only good on paper, but in real life too. Some people you interview will be too modest while others will greatly o ver-exaggerate their abilities in hopes of getting the job. The trick is figuring out who is telling the truth. Who will benefit your business and who is too good to be true? This is where checking references comes in handy. Too often, references are overlooked completely. They are always given, but many employers do not utilize them to their full potential. Ask for a mixture of references such as former employers, peers, and subordinates (if any). This will give you a better overall picture of the candidate and will help you avoid hiring someone who seems great but turns out to be a less than ideal employee. Are They Just Like You?Hiring people who are all the saatkorn will do nothing for your business. You want diversity and unique thought. No matter how great you are, you dont want a bunch of other people just like you working for you. If you do hire someone just like you, then you will both have the same limitations. Instead, look for employees who will compliment you. One perso ns strengths should make up for anothers weaknesses and vice versa. As you become accustomed to hiring, you will learn to recognize what kinds of people you need moving forward. Are They a Good Fit?Trust yourself. You didnt get this far by chance. A lot of hard work and good intuition went into building your own business. If you dont feel like someone is right for your company, then dont hire them. You may not even be able to put your finger on the problem, but you just know. That is okay. How you feel about an individual goes a long way in making a final hiring decision. You know your business better than anyone. You know what you need to succeed. Trust your gut. ConclusionHiring new employees for your small business is crucial to its growth and success. You dont just want to hire anyone who fits the job description. There is so much more to it than that. You want someone you are comfortable with, but who can contribute to your business and help it grow. By creating a checklist and knowing what you are looking for before the interview, you will find the best candidate in no time. As your company continues to evolve, so will your checklist. 5 Ways to Manage Conflict in the Workplace
5 Ways to Manage Conflict in the Workplace5 Ways to Manage Conflict in the WorkplaceMany people head in the opposite direction when they spot conflict in the workplace. But if youre a manager thats a mistake. Conflict can be healthy or unhealthy, but either way, it merits your attention. Healthy conflict focuses on differences of opinion regarding tasks or work-related activities. It can be leveraged and facilitated for gain. Unhealthy conflict is the kind that gets personal. It must be extinguished immediately or it jeopardizes the work environment. 5 Styles of Conflict Management The research work of Kenneth Thomas and Ralph Kilmann in the 1970s led to the identification of five styles of conflict and the development of a widely used self-assessment called the Thomas Kilmann Conflict Mode Instrument, or TKI. Their work suggested that we all have a preferred way to absprache with conflict which serves us well in some situations, but leid all. The key to success is to develop a f lexible toolkit of conflict management approaches and use the one that best fits the situation. The more you can get comfortable with each way of dealing with conflict, the more effective you will be. Collaborating In the collaborative approach, the manager works with the people involved to develop a win-win solution. The focus in on finding a solution that meets everyones needs. This style is appropriate when The situation is not urgentAn important decision needs to be madeThe conflict involves many people or a number of people across teamsPrevious conflict resolution attempts have failed This style is not appropriate when A decision needs to be made urgentlyThe matter is trivial to all involved Competing With a competitive approach, the person who takes the firmest stand wins. This style is often seen as aggressive and can be the cause of others in the conflict feeling taken advantage of. Nevertheless, this style is appropriate when A decision needs to be made quicklyAn un popular decision needs to be madeSomeone is trying to take advantage of a situation This style is not appropriate when People are feeling sensitive about the issueThe situation is not urgentBuy-in is important Compromising With the compromising approach, each person gives up something that contributes towards the conflict resolution. This style is appropriate when A decision needs to be made sooner rather than laterResolving the conflict is more important than having each individual winPower among the people in the conflict is equal This style is not appropriate when A variety of important needs must be metThe situation is extremely urgentOne person holds more power than another Accommodating The accommodating style is one of the most passive conflict resolution methods. One of the individuals gives in so that the other person can get what they want. As a rule, this style is not very effective, but it is appropriate in certain scenarios Maintaining the relationship is more i mportant than winningThe issue at hand is very important to only one person This style is not appropriate when It will not permanently solve the problem Avoiding The last approach is to avoid the conflict entirely. People who use this style tend to accept decisions without question, avoid confrontation, and delegate difficult decisions and tasks. Avoiding is another passive approach that is typically not effective, but it has its uses. This style is appropriate when The issue is trivialThe conflict will resolve itself on its own soon This style is not appropriate when The issue is important to you or your teamThe conflict will grow worse without attention The Bottom Line There is no right or wrong style of conflict resolution. Each has its time and place. Learn how to use all five and youll be much more effective. As a manager, learn to suggest different approaches based on these five styles when striving to defuse conflict.

For those just ju mping into the survey game, its best to roll out data collection slowly focusing on specific target areas and then spreading out surveys over an extended time period. Too many surveys at once can make respondents reluctant to answer and can contribute to poor results. On a similar timing issue, be sure to send out surveys as close as possible to the relevant event. New hires, for example, should ideally receive their surveys after theyve accepted an offer to keep the process fresh in their mind. Below are a few more tips on survey best practices to help get the most out of your QA.Keep it brief The longer the survey the less interaction youre likely to get. Keep surveys to 10 questions or less and be sure to let people know the time up front it will take on average to complete the survey.Be succinct A 10 question limit doesnt pave the way for paragraph-long, multi-idea survey questions that require essay type answers. Additionally, each question should be carefully tailored to addr ess one specific action area for best application to your data mining efforts.Be accessible Last but not least, keep questions accessible to users. This is most easily done by limiting queries to multiple choice selections with minimal free text fields. Also, consider allowing users to submit via mobile devices so that employees can answer on the go or in free time between meetings.Communicating and Analyzing ResultsOnce youve collected your data, its time to process the takeaways. If youve crafted your questions correctly (see above) youll have distinct action areas that correspond to each of the survey topics. Compare the answers as a whole and look for surprises or trends. These could be areas where correction or improvement are sorely needed. Gather these results into positive and negative feedback, along with your action items. Once thats completed, youre ready to present.Survey results can be used to pitch for process changes, facilities improvement or better tools to those i n senior management and approval roles within your company. Be sure to clearly indicate in graphs and presentations how you came to your suggested takeaways. Never present problems without a solution in mind as this can make you seem un-proactive and can undermine future surveys.Lastly, dont forget to communicate results to your survey participants in the way of follow ups on actions taken from their feedback. Thank participants for their time and provide a timetable for any roll-outs based on the survey. Once the changes have been implemented, consider sending a follow-up survey after employees have had a chance to integrate with the new systems or software. Overall, surveys are a great way to get a handle on what youre employees are really thinking. Communication is important to a successful business at all seniority levels. Listen to suggestions and encourage engagement through surveys for a happier, healthier and more productive workforce.

The best schools in each state for under $20k
The best schools in each state for under $20k The best schools in each state for under $20k Hereâs a fact: more than 70% of college graduates carry student loan debt, and the average debt burden stands at $37,172. A surprising new study reveals that the problem affects Millennials just as much as baby boomers. These figures got us thinking about the best schools that wonât break the bank, so we compiled a new map of the top universities in every state costing less than $20,000 in annual tuition and fees.We compiled the data from U.S. News World Reportâs annual Best College Rankings. We captured the top-ranked college in every state costing less than $20k each year in tuition and fees (excluding room and board). We then color-coded each state in a heat map to represent the relative cost of the best higher education - light blue states are cheaper than dark blue states. We added the schoolâs logo for quick reference. This snapshot lets you quickly and easily see where getting a degree at a reputable institution costs the least.Top 10 states with the cheapest flagshi p universities Wyoming â" University of Wyoming: $5,218 Utah â" Brigham Young University, Provo: $5,460 Florida â" University of Florida: $6,380 New Mexico â" University of New Mexico: $7,146 Montana â" Montana State University: $7,150 Idaho â" University of Idaho: $7,488 Alaska â" University of Alaska, Fairbanks: $7,520 Nevada â" University of Nevada, Reno: $7,599 Mississippi â" University of Mississippi: $8,290 North Dakota â" University of North Dakota: $8,447 There are a couple of caveats to keep in mind. Many public universities charge different rates for students who already live in that particular state and students who live in another state. For example, the University of Iowa will only charge Iowa residents $9,190, but the school will charge nonresidents $30,834, or more than three times as much. Itâs worth noting, however, that some universities have reciprocal agreements with other states, where they agree to charge the resident tuition rates for nonresidents, like the agreement between Wisconsin and Minnesota. In other words, donât automatically assume you can or cannot pay the tuition rates listed on the map. It always pays to check.Ladders is now on SmartNews!Download the SmartNews app and add the Ladders channel to read the latest career news and advice wherever you go.In fact, most people donât even pay the published tuition rates. Fully two-thirds of college kids receive some sort of financial aid in the form of scholar ships or grants. That means that if you can combine a scholarship with a low tuition bill from one of these schools, you will be in the best possible position to escape student loan debt altogether. All that being said, there are several key insights on our map. From a geographical perspective, there are affordable top-ranked programs in every region of the country. The West tends to have a higher number of inexpensive universities, like the University of New Mexico ($7,146) or Montana State University ($7,150), but similar price points can be found out East, too. Affordable education is available especially in places like Florida, West Virginia, and Maine. Even in New York, Binghamton University costs just under 10 grand.Whatâs the main takeaway from our map? The least expensive top-ranked school is the University of Wyoming, where it only costs $5,218 each year in tuition and fees. Looking across the entire country, though, there are 28 states with schools under $11,000 and 46 un der $16,000. All this goes to show that getting a degree is always a serious investment, but you donât necessarily have to take on a mountain of debt to graduate.Data: Table 1.1This article first appeared on HowMuch.

Combination of work stress, poor sleep and high blood pressure is deadly
Combination of work stress, poor sleep and high blood pressure is deadly Combination of work stress, poor sleep and high blood pressure is deadly Maybe it appears suddenly, as soon as you start a new job: the scheduleâs wrong for you, the commute seems off, the lighting is weird. Or maybe it creeps up gradually: one overwhelming project after the other, and the pace never slows down. Eventually, however, these work stressors will start affecting your sleep. Just part of the job? Donât ignore it, especially if you already have high blood pressure, says a new study. Work stress and bad sleep are linked to three times higher risk of cardiovascular death in employees with hypertension.Seventy-five million American adults have high blood pressure, according to the CDC.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Laddersâ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more! The study examined nearly 2,000 workers with high blood pressure, ages 25-65, without cardiovascular disease or diabetes. They were followed for almost 18 years. People with poor sleep and a stressful job were three times as likely to die from cardiovascular disease than those who slept well and didnât have work stress. People with hypertension and only work stress were at a 1.6-fold higher risk of cardiovascular death, and those with hypertension and only poor sleep had a 1.8-times higher risk.âWork stressâ was defined by the study as a job where employees had little control over decisions but faced high pressure to deliver results.Study author Professor Karl-Heinz Ladwig, of the German Research Centre for Environmental Health and the Medical Faculty, Technical University of Munich, said that sleep was an essential element to overall health, especially when one has other risk factors. âSleep should be a time for recreation, unwinding, and restoring energy levels. If you have stress at work, sleep helps you recover. Unfortunately, poor sleep and job stress often go hand in hand, and when combined with hypertension the effect is even more toxic.âPoor sleep was defined as having a difficult t ime falling or staying asleep, common for people in stressful jobs. âThey wake up at 4 oâclock in the morning to go to the toilet and come back to bed ruminating about how to deal with work issues,â said Professor Ladwig.Itâs not just one bad night, or a week or bad nights, either. âIt is suffering from a stressful job and poor sleep over many years, which fade energy resources and may lead to an early grave.âBut before that happens, check with your doctor. Between stress, poor sleep, and high blood pressure, âeach condition is a risk factor on its own and there is cross-talk among them, meaning each on increases risk of the other,â said Professor Ladwig. He recommended exercise, healthy eating, and relaxation techniques, as well as blood pressure-lowering medication as approved by a doctor. Employers should also offer programs for stress management and sleep in the workplace, he suggested. The findings were published in the European Journal of Preventative Cardiology .You might also enjoy⦠New neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happy Strangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds 10 lessons from Benjamin Franklinâs daily schedule that will double your productivity The worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs 10 habits of mentally strong people

Vet Pharmaceutical Sales Rep Cover Letter
Vet Pharmaceutical Sales Rep Cover Letter Vet Pharmaceutical Sales Rep Cover Letter Veterinary pharmaceutical representatives should carefully craft their cover letters to highlight their sales skills and knowledge of the animal health industry. It is important to tailor each cover letter to the specific job offered, whether an applicant has significant experience in the field or is seeking their first full time position. Example Cover Letter: Experienced Veterinary Pharmaceutical Sales Rep March 25, 2015Mr. James AndersonSales DirectorAlpha Animal Health123 West High StreetAnytown, GA 12345Dear Mr. Anderson, I recently saw Alpha Animal Healthâs advertisement for a veterinary pharmaceutical sales representative position in Pharma World, and I would like to submit my resume for consideration. My extensive background in the animal health industry and strong record of improving product sales would make me a valuable addition to the Alpha sales team. I have been a sales representative with Mercury Veterinary Health for the past three years, generating new sales and servicing established accounts in Tennessee, Georgia, and Alabama. During this time I was responsible for $1.65 million in new product sales to small animal veterinarians. My territory has consistently posted strong sales for Mercury, growing by an average of 20 percent each year. Prior to my career at Mercury I earned a B.S. in Animal Science with a double major in Marketing from State University. After graduation I spent two years selling veterinary medical devices and surgical equipment for Veterinary Pro Limited, where I opened 72 new accounts in my first year, a freshman sales record for the company. I would appreciate the opportunity to discuss this position with you, and I have included my resume and references for your review. Thank you for your consideration and I hope to speak with you soon. Sincerely, (SIGNATURE) Simon Smith100 West Cross StreetAnytown, GA 12345(123) 456-7890samanthasmithgmail.com Example Cover Letter: New Veterinary Pharmaceutical Sales Rep March 25, 2015Ms. Erin HartwellHiring ManagerMartin Animal Health Inc.678 Main StreetAnytown, KY 12345Dear Ms. Hartwell, I saw your advertisement for an Equine Veterinary Pharmaceutical Sales Representative position in this weekâs edition of Vet Pharma America, and I would like to submit my resume for consideration. As a licensed equine veterinary technician I am very familiar with equine health concerns and the products used by equine veterinarians. As a student at State University I earned a B.S. in Animal Science with a minor in Marketing, maintaining a strong 3.85 grade point average throughout this rigorous course of study. The program at State University also afforded me the opportunity to participate in a sales internship with a major livestock feed sales company during my senior year. After graduation I completed veterinary technician training at Newtown College and started my career in the animal health field at the world renowned Lexington Equine Hospital. While I have not yet sold veterinary pharmaceuticals, I have six years of practical equine experience and many contacts in the industry. I would greatly appreciate the opportunity to discuss this position with you in person at your convenience, and I have included my resume for review. Sincerely, (SIGNATURE) Anna Jacobson123 East High Street, Apt. 1AAnytown, KY 12345(123) 456-7890annajacobsongmail.com General Tips 1. Be sure to tailor your cover letter based on the specific job you are applying for. Donât forget to change the name of the addressee, the date, and where you saw their job posting. There is nothing worse than sending a cover letter to one company that was clearly first written as part of an application to a competing company. 2. Keep your cover letter to one page. Use normal fonts and paper in neutral colors. You want your cover letter to look clear, concise, and professional. Attempts to make your letter âstand outâ (such as using brightly colored paper) are usually seen in a negative light. 3. If the position listing mentions specific skills, be sure to point out that you have those skills. If you donât have sales experience, try to offset that by mentioning significant animal experience in other fields. If you have sales experience in retail or product sales, be sure to mention that as well. Transferrable skills are important when you are seeking to enter a new field. 4. Highlight special skills, training, certifications, or licenses if you have them. New graduates may place extra emphasis on their education, participation in college clubs, and awards.

How Recruiters Review Resumes - Get Yours to the Top of the Heap!
How Recruiters Review Resumes - Get Yours to the Top of the Heap! How Recruiters Review Resumes - Get Yours to the Top of the Heap! Every job seeker sending in a resume to a potential employer wants to believe thereâs actually someone on the receiving end that reads their entire resume word-for-word. The reality is, your resume will most likely never be read in its entirety â" especially in todayâs competitive job market. Most employers are overwhelmed with the number of applicants they get for each job, most of whom arenât remotely qualified. Unfortunately, in this point-and-click world of online applications, most people apply to hundreds of jobs knowing theyâre not qualified. Theyâre just hoping to get lucky. Typically, resumes arrive by email and someone looks at each one but because of the volume, they must make a judgment on each one quickly â" typically around six seconds is given per resume. The reader then decides if each candidate is worth further consideration. All of this is decided by a brief scan, trying to determine if the person has the relevant background and experience for the role. If they dont see any connection between background and experience and the job requirements, they immediately move on because there are plenty more to review. So how are resumes typically reviewed? How do they make those snap decisions with just a quick scan? Hereâs a few tips on how recruiters review resumes: They scan the document to see if there are any related keywords in the resume that are apparent. Most have to do with skills, tools, processes etc., giving preference to recent experience vs. history from years ago. If not, they move on. If so They continue to look for any applicable education, certifications, or other required criteria. If not, they move on. If so That resume gets placed in the âmaybeâ pile and they will come back to reevaluate it and compare it to the other resumes that end up in the âmaybeâ pile. This might make the employer/recruiter seem a little cruel and heartless but theyâre not. Is this a flawed system? Sure, but as of now, there isnât another way to deal with the immense volume of job applicants that cross a recruiterâs desk. So how do you make your resume stand out? Your resume needs to scream âIâm a fit!â in that first initial scan! So, make your work history relevant and clear. Be sure to format your skills, experience and certifications so they jump out. Write in brief, concise phrases so they are easily digested in the first scan. Donât use long sentences or paragraphs. If you can begin to understand the typical process an employer takes when reviewing resumes, you can be more strategic to give yourself a better chance of being selected.

Domestic Violence in the U.S. Military
Domestic Violence in the U.S. Military Domestic Violence in the U.S. Military Domestic violence in the U.S. military has become a focus for the Department of Defense as awareness of the issue has grown. Domestic violence is a complicated problem and when it involves a service member, how it is handled can be a complex process and one that the victim may not understand. Domestic Violence Involving Civilians and Service Members The militarys role in a domestic violence case depends a lot on whether the accused is a service member or a civilian. If the abuser is a civilian, the military has no control over the matter. In most cases, all the military can do is turn information over to civilian authorities. Installation commanders do have the power to bar civilians from military installations, and they will exercise that power to protect military members from abusive civilian spouses, if necessary. If the abuser is a military member, domestic violence situations are handled on two separate tracks: the military justice system and the family advocacy system. Its important to realize that these are two separate systems. The Family Advocacy System Family Advocacy is an identification, intervention, and treatment program- not a punishment system. Its entirely possible that the Family Advocacy Committee will return a finding of substantiated abuse, but there will be insufficient legally admissible evidence to allow punishment under the provisions of military justice. On the other hand, one should realize that the Family Advocacy system does not enjoy the right of confidentiality under military law (such as with chaplains and attorneys), and evidence gathered, and statements made during Family Advocacy investigations may be used in military justice proceedings. If the incident(s) happen off base, civilian agencies may be given jurisdiction on the legal side, but Family Advocacy should still be notified. Local police may or may not report the incident to base officials. Department of Defense (DOD) officials are currently working to develop memoranda of understanding with civilian law enforcement authorities to establish such reporting procedures. Regulations and Response to Reports Regulations require military and DOD officials to report any suspicion of family violence to Family Advocacy, no matter how small. It includes commanders, first sergeants, supervisors, medical personnel, teachers and military police. In many cases, when responding to a domestic situation, the commander or first sergeant will order the military individual to reside in the dormitory/barracks until the Family Advocacy investigation is completed. It may be accompanied by a military protective order, which is a written order prohibiting the military member from having any contact with the alleged victim. Many bases have an abused, dependent safeguard system, where the first sergeant or commander can place the family members in billeting under an assumed name. When domestic violence is reported to Family Advocacy, the agency will assign a caseworker to assess the victims safety, develop a safety plan, and investigate the incident. Throughout the process, victims advocates ensure that the victims medical, mental health and protection needs are being met. Family Advocacy officials will also interview the alleged abuser. The alleged abuser is informed of his or her rights under the provisions of Article 31 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ) and does not have to speak to the investigation officials if he or she chooses not to. If child abuse is involved, regulations require that local child protection agencies be notified, and participate in the process. After the Investigation After the investigation, the case is then presented to a multidisciplinary case review committee with representatives from the Family Advocacy Program, law enforcement, staff judge advocate, medical staff, and chaplain. The committee decides whether the evidence indicates abuse occurred and arrives at one of the following findings: SubstantiatedA case that has been investigated and the preponderance of available information indicates that abuse has occurred. It means that the information that supports the occurrence of abuse is of greater weight or more convincing than the information that indicates that abuse did not occur. SuspectedA case determination is pending further investigation. The duration of an investigation in a suspected case should not exceed 12 weeks. UnsubstantiatedAn alleged case that has been investigated and the available information is insufficient to support the claim that child abuse and/or neglect or spouse abuse did occur. The family needs no Family Advocacy services. Family Advocacy Committee Definitions of Abuse In making determinations, the Committee uses the following definitions for abuse: Child Abuse and/or NeglectIncludes physical injury, sexual maltreatment, emotional maltreatment, deprivation of necessities, or combinations that harm or threaten a childs well-being by an individual responsible for the childs welfare. The term encompasses both acts and omissions on the part of a responsible person.A child is a person under 18 years of age for whom a parent, guardian, foster parent, caretaker, an employee of a residential facility or any staff person providing out-of-home care is legally responsible. The term child means a natural child, adopted child, stepchild, foster child or ward. The term also includes an individual of any age who is incapable for self-support because of a mental or physical incapacity and for whom treatment in a military treatment facility (MTF) is authorized. Spouse AbuseIncludes assault, battery, threat to injure or kill, other acts of force or violence, or emotional maltreatment inflicted on a partner in a lawful marriage when one of the partners is a military member or is employed by the Department of Defense and is eligible for treatment in an MTF. A spouse under 18 years of age shall be treated in this category. Based on the committees recommendations, the commander decides what action to take regarding the abuser. The commander determines whether to order the individual into treatment and/or to seek to impose disciplinary procedures under the UCMJ. The commander may also seek to obtain the discharge of the service member from the military. Abuse Victims and a Spouse's Military Career Victims often hesitate to report abuse because they fear the impact it will have on their spouses career. A Department of Defense study found that service members reported for abuse are 23 percent more likely to be separated from the service than non-abusers and somewhat more likely to have other than honorable discharges. The majority who remain in the military are more likely to be promoted more slowly than non-abusers. Even if a domestic violence case is handled off base in the civilian criminal court system, criminal conviction or even a misdemeanor involving domestic violence can end a service members military career; the 1996 Lautenberg Amendment to the Gun Control Act of 1968 makes it unlawful for anyone who has been convicted of a misdemeanor of domestic violence to possess firearms. The law applies to law enforcement officers and military personnel. Protection for Spouses and Dependents Many military spouses dont know that federal law gives financial protection to the spouse if the member is discharged for an offense that involves abuse of the then-current spouse or a dependent child. It doesnt matter if the discharge is a punitive discharge imposed by a court-martial or an administrative discharge initiated by the commander. The key is that the reason for the discharge must be for a dependent-abuse offense. The term involves abuse of the then-current spouse or a dependent child means that the criminal offense is against the person of that spouse or a dependent child. Crimes that may qualify as dependent-abuse offenses are ones such as sexual assault, rape, sodomy, assault, battery, murder, and manslaughter. (This is not an exhaustive or exclusive listing of dependent-abuse offenses, but is provided for illustrative purposes only.) Victim Payments The duration of the payments cannot exceed 36 months. If the military member had less than 36 months of obligated military service at the time of the discharge or imposition of the court-martial sentence, then the duration of the payments will be the length of the members obligated service, or 12 months, whichever is greater. If a spouse receiving payments remarries, payments terminate as of the date of the remarriage. Payment shall not be renewed if such remarriage is terminated. If the payments to the spouse terminate due to remarriage and there is a dependent child not living in the same household as the spouse or member, payments shall be made to the dependent child. If the military member who committed the abuse resides in the same household as the spouse or dependent child to whom compensation is otherwise payable, payment shall terminate as of the date the member begins residing in such household. If the victim was a dependent child and the spouse has been found to have been an active participant in the conduct constituting the criminal offense or to have actively aided or abetted the military member in such conduct against that dependent child, the spouse shall not be paid transitional compensation. In addition to the transitional benefits, if the military member was eligible for retirement and was denied retirement because of the criminal offense, the spouse can still apply to a divorce court for a division of retired pay under the provisions of the Uniformed Services Former Spouse Protection Act, and the military will honor the payments. (Note: Under this provision, such payments terminate upon remarriage).

The scientific process to heal any emotional trauma
The scientific process to heal any emotional trauma The scientific process to heal any emotional trauma In Greek mythology, Medusa was a monster, often described as a winged human female with living venomous snakes in place of hair. Those who gazed upon Medusaâs face would turn to stone. In a similar way, people who go through hard experiences can turn to stone, emotionally. As trauma expert Dr. Peter Levine has said, âIt is how we respond to a traumatic event that determines whether trauma will be a cruel and punishing Medusa turning us into stone, or whether it will be a spiritual teacher taking us along vast and uncharted pathways.âWeâve all experienced âtrauma,â whether we think we have or not. According to Dr. Lisa Firestone (emphasis mine):âA trauma can be defined as any significant negative event or incident that shaped us. It can emerge from any impactful instance that made us feel bad, scared, hurt or ashamed. By this definition, we have all experienced some degree of trauma in the process of growing up.Having âsuppressed emotionsâ is another way of saying we ha ve unresolved trauma in our lives. But what does this actually mean? How people become emotionally stuckIf youâve had a hard experience in your past where something negative happened, or where you failed miserably, you might never step far outside your comfort zone again. In that case, youâve become incredibly limited because of your past.Your emotions own you, rather than you owning your emotions. When this happens, your personality stops developing, and you become incredibly predictable as a person.Your life becomes quite repetitive. You may continue to develop mentally and cognitively, such as learning from books and school. You could have a head full of facts and knowledge, which are easily acquired in an information world. But emotionally, you are stone. You are frozen at the same level you were when you got hurt.If we never resolve the emotional pain, then we are forever damaged and crippled in our lives. As a result, we begin avoiding situations that would make us vulnerable t o experiencing similar pain again. We become âfrozenâ in our development as a human being, unable to embrace and fully take-in new experiences. An easy way to examine your level of emotional maturity is how often you step outside of your comfort zone. If itâs rare to put yourself into the vulnerable position of not knowing the answers or how things will turn out, then you likely have trauma from your past that is holding you hostage - emotionally - and stopping you from fully developing your potential as a person.Research shows that the older people get, generally, the less open they are to having new experiences. In this article, Iâm going to break-down the science of how to overcome all emotional blocks and become emotionally-free.When you become emotionally free and flexible, you become far more dynamic and fluid as a personality. Your ability to learn and adapt skyrocket.Your lifestyle and interests will continually change because you have the freedom to take on new thing s. Youâre no longer hostage to your emotions.Youâre not afraid of getting hurt.Youâre not afraid of being wrong. In the words of Dr. Susan Jeffers, you know that regardless of what happens, âYou can handle it.â Hence, she says we should, âFeel the fear and do it anyway.âAccording to educator Sir Ken Robinson, âIf youâre not prepared to be wrong, youâll never come up with anything original.âOne of the primary reasons many people donât view themselves as creative is because art and creativity are emotional and vulnerable experiences. You have to put yourself out there. You have to try something that might fail.As a result, many people discard the idea altogether, claiming that some inherent part of their personality or genetics is simply not âcreative.âThis isnât true.Extreme creativity is available to anyone who is emotionally flexible and healthy. In fact, creativity is often the doorway to emotional freedom, because, through art and creativity, a person can courageously put themselves âout there,â and that very act of courage shifts a personâs relationship with their emotions and their past.Shifting your relationship with your emotionsItâs important to note that when it comes to healing suppressed pain or trauma, that you donât have to sit on someoneâs couch and re-hash the past.Instead, you need to courageously move forward in your life.As you step outside of your comfort zone, you will experience the stress-response - fight, flee or freeze. Being out of the comfort zone is a beautiful experience because it is entirely physical and emotional.Itâs a full-on sensory experience - something many people stop experiencing as they grow older. The main reason this âsomaticâ experience arises is that when youâre out of your âcomfort zoneâ - or in a new situation where you donât fully know how things will turn out - youâre in a state of uncertainty. Many psychologists argue that âuncertaintyâ is the foundat ion of all fears. This makes complete sense because our brains are actually designed to predict the outcomes of our behavior. Therefore, when weâre in a new situation, all sorts of physical and emotional red lights start to signal - our stress response. What our brain is telling us is that weâre in uncharted territory. It is your relationship with THIS EXPERIENCE - your stress response while dealing with new things - that reflects your level of emotional maturity. When you re-establish this relationship, you actually change your memories of the past. But you only change your memory of the past if you donât freeze up. Because undoubtedly, the act of stepping outside of your comfort zone and trying something new may trigger negative emotions and memories from the past.Youâll try to sabotage yourself. But instead, you want to be âpsychologically flexible,â which means you fully take in the experience, and move forward toward your goal anyway. In other words, you feel the fear and do it anyway. What youâll quickly realize is that you can do hard things. You can âhandle it.âEven if things fall apart or donât work out the first time, you can figure out. You can commit to big things and you can keep those commitments, regardless of what you have to learn and become along the way.You can do it.This is how confidence is developed. But thereâs more. This is also THE ONLY WAY a person can become fully self-actualized.Breaking-down the process of self-actualizationAccording to Abraham Maslow, âself-actualizationâ is the emotional state of a person who is in a position to achieve their highest potential. They have had all of their âbaseâ needs - physical, emotional, and relational - met. They are a healthy, happy, and mature human being.Having a healthy sense of self-esteem is great. But self-actualization is something totally different. You need far more than self-esteem to become self-actualized.There are lots of people out there who feel good ab out themselves but arenât willing to pay the emotional price of expanding their personality. You cannot become self-actualized if youâre comfortable where you are.According to Maslow, a key requirement to becoming self-actualized is having what he calls, âpeak experiences.â He defined peak experiences âas rare, exciting, oceanic, deeply moving, exhilarating, elevating experiences that generate an advanced form of perceiving reality, and are even mystic and magical in their effect upon the experimenter.âPeak experiences are those moments that stretch and shift your perspective of yourself and reality. As Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr. said, âA mind that is stretched by a new experience can never go back to its old dimensions.âThe only way to have your mind stretched is to step outside of your comfort zone and have a new experience. In other words, âpeak experiencesâ are simply those moments where you go through deep experiential learning. These moments of deep learning a nd transformation leave you in a state of awe, wonderment, and gratitude. You need to have these experiences regularly in order to reach a state of self-actualization.Actually, you need to make having soul-stretching experiences your ânormalâ way of life. Because once this becomes your way of life, then you are completely emotionally-free and flexible. When you are emotionally free and flexible, then you as a person also become free and flexible. This doesnât mean that you no longer experience emotions or fears. Rather, it means that you are completely fine experiencing whatever is required to achieve what you believe you should, or what you believe is right.Youâre no longer constrained by your emotions, and thus, youâre no longer STONE. Instead, youâre highly fluid and flexible, even spontaneous.Breaking the process down into bite-sized stepsâCourage is the Gateway. This is where you start to see life as challenging and exciting instead of overwhelming.â - Dr. David H awkins Wherever you are in your life, it will require courage to get to the next level Courage means you proactively face risks and uncertainty in order to achieve a noble and worthwhile end Courage is ALWAYS the gateway to the ânext levelâ As you courageously step into the unknown, youâll experience the stress-response - flight, flee, freeze You experience the stress response because your brain is designed to predict the outcomes of your behavior, and when youâre in a totally new situation, you cannot fully predict what will happen Uncertainty is the foundation of all fears The only way to truly be âfreeâ is to embrace the uncertainty of moving forward in your life - of not knowing exactly how things will turn out yet remaining committed to your values and purpose Becoming flexible and successful while outside of your comfort zone is known as emotional flexibility or having a tolerance for ambiguity As you step outside of your comfort zone and successfully move forward, youâll have peak experiences which will stretch your perspective of yourself and even of reality The more peak experiences you have, the more emotionally flexible you will become As you have new experiences, your memory of the past will change Youâll no longer be bound by your past All âtraumaâ or âsuppressed emotionsâ will be gone Youâll be healed You heal yourself not by going backward but going forward (hence: the best defense is offense) Once you get to the point where you are no longer in your own way, emotionally, then you are self-actualized Self-actualized people are those people who are willing to be and do whatever must be done to live their values and fulfill their purpose. They act courageously regularly. Daily. They are flexible and powerful. They werenât born that way. Instead, they proactively chose, over and over, to become who they are.You can choose to become self-actualized yourself. But one thing is certain. Everything you want is on the other side of fear. You must be bold in your action. You canât be frozen to your past. You have to move forward. This will take courage. It will involve failing a lot and learning a lot.But with each step forward, youâll have peak experiences. Those brief windows of time where youâre in awe of everything. Life will become more spiritual to you.Youâll develop a sense of mission and purpose.Youâll stop overly defining yourself and what you can become and what you can do.Your potential will increasingly expand.Youâll continuously watch yourself do things beyond what you p reviously thought was possible.Youâll watch as your life continues to take on a new form, and as the goals you set are quickly realized. Are you going to take the journey?Itâs not easy.It never will be.And the fear is never going to go away. But for this, youâre grateful. Because you know that this life is an educational experience. You have the emotional freedom and relational protection to go big.So youâre going to go big - whatever that means to you.Ready to upgrade?Iâve created a cheat sheet for putting yourself into a PEAK-STATE, immediately. These are the 5 most disgusting, germ-filled places on the plane
These are the 5 most disgusting, germ-filled places on the plane These are the 5 most disgusting, germ-filled places on the plane Study after study shows that airplanes and airports are absolute cesspools of germs. The fact that some people manage to travel and not get horribly sick is absolutely incredible. Ladders recently reported that airport kiosks have 1,475 times the amount of bacteria than your houseâs toilet seat but the danger doesnât stop there. Heck, you arenât even on the plane yet. And according to new research, thatâs where the real icky germs are. In fact you are basically sitting in them for the duration of the flight.According to a new study from Canadian Broadcasting Corporationâs Marketplace, one of the grossest places on an airplane is that seat-back pocket. Apparently people look at that pocket as a trash can. And we arenât just talking gum wrappers. Think more like food remnants, dirty diapers and used condoms and tampons. Permission to scream now.Bacteria everywhereBut wait, itâs not over yet. There is also a ton of bacteria on the headrest. Apparently both of these areas g et the least amount of cleaning focus. So even if you think it looks clean, it really isnât. âWe donât have rags, we donât have spray on board,â former WestJet employee Stéphane Poirier told Marketplace. âLots of [cleaners] are a dangerous good ⦠so itâs either water from the aircraft, or a napkin.â Well thatâs great. Apparently airplane cleaners approach cleaning with the same amount of enthusiasm I do.As for the the next three germiest places the washroom handle came in next not surprisingly. People still believe that washing their hands after using the facility is just a suggestion. This was followed by the tray table and then your seatbelt.âWith 2,155 microbes per square inch, the table tray is far dirtier than a typical airplane toilet seat, making it an extremely unsanitary surface to eat your food from,â Microban International noted. âTo ensure that your tray table is fresh, use a disinfectant wipe to clean the surface both before and after using i t. We would also recommend putting something down (such as a clean tissue) to prevent contact between your food and the tray table.â That cozy airplane blanket isnât too great either and those come in a sealed package. Permission to scream again. But wait it gets better. What kind of bacteria are they finding on all these places you will be putting your body on? Samples collected from various flights that were then analyzed at the University of Guelph found E. coli, mold, and yeast. And of all of these were at high enough levels to cause infections in humans. You may want to pack your hazmat suit for your next flight.
